systemd is genuinely novel systems software—socket activation, cgroup integration, dependency ordering solved real problems that sysvinit couldn't. The codebase is serious (Coverity, OSS-Fuzz, CII badges earned, not bought). But it's also the poster child for scope creep: started as init, now owns logging, networking, DNS resolution, user sessions, and probably your firstborn.
